Therapy Q & A
What is Therapy?
Therapy is a form of counseling that focuses on identifying and understanding unresolved personal issues that have a negative effect on your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and interpersonal relationships. It allows you to process past experiences and residual feelings so they no longer control your thoughts and actions, resulting in deeper self-awareness, a more positive outlook, a greater authentic self, and a sense of balance and harmony in your life.

Who can benefit from therapy?
If you’re struggling with issues that affect your mental health, marriage, career, or other life areas, you can benefit from therapy. Family Addiction Specialist provides therapy to a wide range of individuals from ultra-high-net-worth executive professionals and athletes struggling with career pressures, anxieties and transitions to young adults combatting digital addictions or other behavioral issues. Some of the conditions that Family Addiction Specialist specialize in include:
-
Anxiety
-
Depression
-
Stress
-
Career performance
-
Past trauma
-
Relationship troubles
-
Communication challenges
-
Self-destructive behaviors
-
Poor self-image
-
Life transitions
Family Addiction Specialist also incorporates holistic, wellness and spiritually focused methods of treatment into therapy such as meditation, mind-body connection work, and nutritional and fitness coaching as well as other forms of therapy such as Hypnosis or Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).
This multidisciplinary approach helps you become aware of negative thinking, understand the underlying drives behind your behavior, and discover your own strategies to cope with specific challenges.
Family Addiction Specialist will also assess for underlying mental health conditions, sleep problems, or addictions for which psychotropic medications may be beneficial. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) may be suggested in the short-term or long-term if holistic methods and behavioral changes are not sufficient in addressing your concerns. In such cases Family Addiction Specialist will encourage you to be evaluated by the team’s psychiatrist to determine if you may benefit from medication therapies.
How long will I need to be in therapy?
How long you will need to remain in therapy depends on your individual goals, the types of issues you need to work through, and other important considerations. Unlike more traditional styles of therapy, Family Addiction Specialist strives to get to the root of your issues as quickly as possible while providing the most personalized and quality care that has a positive, lasting impact on your emotional health and well-being.
What should I expect from counseling services?
Therapy is a collaborative effort that focuses on finding solutions and maximizing your strengths. Your therapist will begin with an initial assessment to learn more about your presenting problems and goals, and to evaluate any underlying issues. This assessment will allow your therapist to determine your needs in order to curate a customized treatment plan and to provide the most personalized care. Depending on your specific needs and goals, sessions are scheduled bi-weekly, weekly, or two or more times per week and may last for 1 to 2 hours per session. Deep dives are also available which can often benefit individuals, couples or families who are in unexpected and sudden crisis, with sessions lasting 3 or more hours.
What else should I know about therapy?
Therapy services are available in-person and through phone calls, Zoom or Facetime interactions. Your therapist will also provide you with text message and/or email check-ins and communications. To learn more about virtual therapy, please visit the Teletherapy service page.
Currently therapy appointments are being held in-person at the Family Addiction private and discreet office in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City. Additionally, Family Addiction Specialist offers home and office visits, or concierge services to other convenient and safe locations.
If you’re ready for therapy, call Family Addiction Specialist at their Manhattan or Brooklyn office to set up an initial assessment and talk about your goals and needs.
When requested or determined to be more beneficial for the patient, Family Addiction Specialist also conducts coaching for individuals and families. Please review the coaching service pages for more information.

What is Teletherapy?
Teletherapy, also referred to as telecounseling, teleheatlh, or telemedicine, is a form of virtual therapy or online therapy. Teletherapy utilizes current technology to provide an accessible and convenient way for individuals and families to receive psychotherapy from the comfort and safety of their own home, office, or other location. It is a favorable option when an individual does not have time in their schedule to travel to and from their therapist’s office or when an individual cannot be in the same room as their therapist (e.g, for logistic or health reasons).
Who can benefit from Teletherapy?

Family Addiction Specialist specializes in teletherapy for substance abuse issues, such as alcohol or prescription medication abuse and behavioral addictions, such as gambling. They also provide effective treatment for mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, stress, and family conflict.
Teletherapy is especially beneficial for individuals who are not able to regularly attend in-person therapy sessions. Teletherapy can be used as the sole means of psychotherapy or coaching, or it can be used on an as-needed basis when the recipient is unable to attend in-person sessions. Teletherapy can be utilized from anywhere in the world as long as one has access to the internet or a telephone.
Is Teletherapy effective?
Yes. Teletherapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy. Research has documented that teletherapy is as effective as in-person therapy.
Is Teletherapy for me?
Teletherapy is for anyone who is ready to receive support for an addiction or mental health issue. All treatment from Family Addiction Specialist begins with a phone consultation. This is followed by a more thorough assessment to confirm that Family Addiction Specialist is the right treatment option.

Thereafter, the team at Family Addiction Specialist will create a customized treatment plan to help the client move forward in their life.
Do you offer substance abuse screening via Teletherapy?
